Confident 13-year-old Meilin Lee is constantly watched over by her overprotective mother, which quickly upsets Mei. Things become problematic when Mei turns into a red panda whenever she feels strong emotions. She learns that this is a spell that has afflicted the women of her Chinese-Canadian family for many generations. However, with a ritual performed during a red moon, one can banish the red panda into an object forever.

In Elemental City, residents of all four elements live together more or less peacefully, but tend to keep to themselves.

The fire elements Brandolf and Glute Lumen move to Element City, where they face the xenophobia of the other elements and struggle to find housing. They eventually open a grocery store which over time attracts many Fire customers. Brandolf plans to hand the store over to his daughter Ember when she is ready so he can retire. But when he allows the impulsive Ember to run the store alone for a day, the stress causes her to have a temper tantrum that sends water and Wade Ripple flowing into the store's basement.

Inside Out 2 returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who've long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren't sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she's not alone.
